Lydia, our PMO Consultant based in Sydney, offers a glimpse into her journey and Project Management experiences at MP.

Your new neighbours ask you what you do for a living; in a few words, what do you reply?

I support clients by coordinating project activities and ensuring core project milestones are met. I deliver projects and ensure robust project management processes are in place.

From United Kingdom to Australia, tell us all about your mobility!

I am originally from Ireland but had been living in the UK for a few years when I joined MP. I worked within the manufacturing sector on multiple client projects based in Bristol. I really loved working with the UK team and had the opportunity to deliver exciting projects with colleagues across the country.

Then, I decided to take a sabbatical to do some travelling after the pandemic. While I was travelling, I spent some time in Australia, and I loved it straight away! The people and the lifestyle here really appealed to me, and I knew I wanted to come back. When I moved to Sydney, the team were very supportive and within a few weeks I was quickly onboarded again!

I am now working with a client in the travel industry which perfectly combines my project management background with my passion for travel!

I have loved being able to live in different countries, experience new cultures and ways of life. I enjoy working in a role that allows me to be so mobile and gives me the ability to deliver projects in any part of the world.

Have you always wanted to be a PMO Consultant?

Yes, I’ve always worked in the project management field, and I really enjoy delivering projects and working with global teams. The consulting space really appealed to me as being a project consultant would allow me to work on exciting projects across multiple businesses and industries. The challenges and complex environments that different projects bring keep the role interesting and very gratifying. I love being able to bring my experience from different companies and industries to a new client to help them improve their project management capabilities and really drive positive change in each engagement.

What makes MP special to you?

The best thing about MP is that it really supports you and your career. This is really apparent in my case as I was given the opportunity to travel and when I decided to relocate, I was supported in joining the Sydney team both from the UK and Australian sides of the business. The development opportunities working in a company like MP are endless, and once you define your career path and objectives, there are managers and coaches there to support you and push you to achieve your goals. The support within MP at a global level offers a wide network of expertise experience across both clients and projects in different countries.

What opportunities as a PMO Consultant are there at MP?

The opportunities as a PMO consultant in MP vary depending on what skills you want to grow. There are a wide number of career paths available, whether you want to specialise in PMO as a discipline, gain experience across different industries, or move into a delivery manager role. The great thing about MP is that you can define your career goals and work with your managers and coaches to achieve this through your client delivery. In my current role, I am taking on more responsibility to manage the engagement team and client relationship to drive delivery.

If you had to give a single reason to be a PMO Consultant, what would you say?

The best part of being a PMO consultant is that you have the opportunity to work on exciting projects and deliver results in complex business environments. No two projects or clients are the same, so the role is constantly changing and pushes you to evolve to new challenges. Being able to support clients to meet their objectives and deliver projects is so rewarding.

If MP were a movie, which one would it be and why?

That’s a tricky one. I’d say MP is more like a TV series than a movie as it has multiple plot lines and main characters: everyone has a part in the MP story.

What does a PMO Consultant do after a working day?

One of my favourite things about being in Sydney is that after work, I can go down to the beach! I live beside Bondi beach, so I always try to go for a walk or catch the sunset in the evening. The fresh air and waves are a great way to relax after a busy day.

Can you give us 3 tips
for starting a new life abroad?

I would say “try something new”. Moving countries is the chance to really step outside your comfort zone, which can be daunting, but it’s also super exciting. I’ve found going to local events is a great way to meet new friends and get to know a place better. By just going out and exploring a new city or town you start to become more familiar with the place and any cultural differences which can make your new location feel more comfortable and homey, plus chatting to locals gives you great insights into good spots to visit!
